Forgot where you left the keys when you were holding on to them the entire time? How about forgetting where you placed your book just a few seconds after you left it on top of the table in the bedroom? You don’t have to become too concerned about this. This is a natural occurrence, assuming you don’t experience this same pattern every day. As we grow older, our brain begins to run out of space to save our memories and therefore will try to get rid of some older ones. However, when too many things are being thrown at the brain at the same time, it may become clogged and therefore could cause some delays in the way our brain processes information.
If you value your precious brain and want to make sure it does not quickly deteriorate, then you should consider making a list of things that you can do in order to keep it well. Beefing up the brain is not really a complicated manner.
Here are 5 different ways that can be followed in order to care for your brain:
1. Eating the right food
Go for food that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These can be found in fish like salmon, as well as in walnuts and fruits. Feeding yourself with food that is loaded with saturated fats and trans fat are an easy way of disrupting your brain’s synapses. Such fats are common in processed foods. Eating right means you pick a diet that contains nutrients that will enhance brain function and development. For example, eating fish that is rich in omega fatty acids is a good choice. Eating too much also has a negative effect, so be aware of your calories.
Participate in workouts and exercises. Be sure you give your body some stretching every day. People who are active tend to have healthier brains because both the body and the mind are continuously in motion. Being active also helps the brain think better and faster. On the other hand, a poorly-maintained body could lead to stressful everyday challenges that may be harmful to both body and mind.
3. Workout for the brain
Treat yourself to some challenging brain teasers like puzzles, memory games, and other brain stimulating activities. You see, it is not only the body that needs some form of exercise: the brain also needs some sort of stretching. This way, the brain is not stagnant and is always thinking. Likewise, doing this will keep you mentally alert because of the brain stimulation.
Give your brain a well-deserved rest. Studies have shown that resting helps in consolidating information that is kept inside the brain. It also helps people to perform better after getting some rest. Even a short rest, like a 90 minute nap, can do a lot for the brain.
5. Continue to remember things and happenings
For older ones, some tend to have this idea that they are not capable of remembering things because of age. Because of this, they are not actually exerting any effort at all to remember. This is a negative approach that could create a downward spiraling effect if not corrected. Regardless of age, we need to try to continue remembering things no matter our age. This is actually one highly effective way of exercising the mind.
There may be other things that can be done in order to beef up our brain. However, it is important at this stage to understand that there is no single solution to all of these concerns. In fact, even the list of possible ways does not work at all times. The best way to approach this is to keep trying and keep looking for results. In the future, we can expect that scientists will have even a larger list of tools that could be used for maintaining a healthy brain.
