Does your memory matter? Of course! Regardless of age, people have some sort of memory throughout their lives. Memory helps us recall a lot of things that we need as we go about our lives every day. Sometimes memories are the real essence of living, because otherwise, how do we live our lives if what we only recall is the present and none of the past?
Everyone knows that hidden inside our head is our brain. The brain is like a super computer, in fact, far better and more advanced than a computer. Throughout history, scientists have been puzzled over and over again at what makes our brain tick. Many amazing discoveries about the brain have been made, and as technology continues to advance, studies about the different aspects of brain function are continually enhanced.
Recall brain power
Aside from the fact that the brain controls every part of our body, it has another important function – the power of recall. Similar to a computer, our mind is composed of two parts: a short term and long term memory. The short term memory is like the computer memory known as RAM. It can store temporary events in the brain while it is analyzed whether to save it or to forget it. The long term memory is like a computer hard drive, a storage area for saving events permanently. Everything that we do every day, including things we encounter, friends we meet, and activities we do, these are taken in by the brain.
First, the short term memory tries to recall all of these things. After deciding which of these are important, some of these are safely kept in the long term memory bank.
Forgetting things
Some people are great at recalling things, but others can easily forget things like the name of someone they’ve met just a few minutes ago. It all depends on how well our brain processes information. Of course, most everyone has an experience of forgetting one thing or another. Furthermore, we have different ways of indicating which events are important and which ones deserve forgetting. For instance, let’s say you and your friend went out the whole day. The next day, there might be things that you won’t be able to recall but your friend would remember. Likewise, there are things that he might not recall but were still fresh in your mind. It only shows that we have different ways of focusing our minds on things that happen around us.
Do you know why phone numbers or mobile phone numbers are limited to a certain number of digits? That’s because based on studies, there is a number of digits that the average human mind can remember and recall from time to time. Even in advertisements, the number of seconds a message is conveyed to the viewing public is adjusted in a way that it would easily be remembered and instantly be recalled.
Try to avoid “events” which may cause harm to your brain
If you think there is a pattern of forgetting things, then your memory could be damaged for one reason or another. Contact a medical specialist immediately for consultation. In most cases, injuries to the brain happen when the head is hit by something very hard. Getting such injuries can happen at any time, at any place. Even in sports where physical contact is very frequent, head injuries are a common sight. Football players are often interviewed and asked quickly while being in the sidelines. The purpose of such is to determine if the player is suffering from head injuries. Falling from a high position where the head is hit first can cause severe brain injuries. Vehicular accidents can also cause injury to the brain if the riders and drivers are not safely buckled in their seat belts.
Aside from being careful and staying away from events that could cause harm to the brain and body, there are other useful ways to maintain a good mind.
